DIY Tips for Sump Pump Maintenance and Inspection

Each type and brand of sump pump will have different requirements, so always refer to your owner’s manual for specific directions. As a general rule, however, the following tips for sump pump maintenance and inspection should be followed:

Know how your sump pump functions. This knowledge is easy to find if your sump pump is new and you have saved the owner’s manual. If not, you have some investigating to do. Look for a brand name on top of the pump. Can you find a model number stamped somewhere? You could compare the appearance of the sump pump with models on the internet. You own a submersible sump pump when the pump is in a sump pit. A pedestal sump pump sits on the floor; it’s easier to maintain because of easy access to set up or take down. Because a pedestal does not constantly run, it will last longer.

Test your sump pump to make sure it works before a storm hits. Ensure your pump is connected to power, and fill the sump pit with water. Is it working smoothly without any strange noises?

Clean your sump pump regularly. Follow the following cleaning tips:

  1. Turn the sump pump off as well as all other appliances. You do not want appliances (like the washer) to fill the sump pit while cleaning.
  2. Rinse the pump off with a garden hose. You may have to use a plastic scraper to remove any stuck gunk.
  3. Vacuum out the sump pit with a wet vac.
  4. Allow the pump to dry and reattach it to the discharge pipe and plug it in again.

Keep your sump pump coveredYour sump pump will stay cleaner longer when covered. The cover should fit tightly, with openings for wires (the stand if it’s a pedestal sump pump) and the drainage pipe.

Check the drainage pipe for blockages.  A clogged drain pipe will cause a good sump pump to malfunction. Clear the pipeline and you may have avoided a call for sump pump repair

Consider installing a backup sump pump.  When you need it most, a storm could cut off your power, leaving your sump pump ineffective. A pump that runs on a battery or a water pressure source from your home is a good “Plan B” should a storm knock out your power. It may not be as effective as electricity, but at least your sump pump will operate.
